Refuge de la Pierre à Bérard
- Altitude: 1924 m
- Capacity: 38 People
Opening period: from 15 June to 25 September (but may depend on snow/weather conditions).
The Pierre à Bérard refuge is located in the Aiguilles Rouges massif, close to the nature reserve.
This traditional mountain hut was built around a huge rock that protects it from avalanches during the winter season.
The refuge can sleep 38 people, either accommodation-only or half-board (evening meal + bed + breakfast). We serve a set menu evening meal that is both complete and well-adapted to the needs of hikers.
Light meals and snacks are available at lunchtime (a selection of cold meats, the "Bérard selection",
traditional "croûte au fromage", pasta, omelettes and cold drinks).
The refuge receives its fresh produce twice a week thanks to our trusty donkeys (Oscar and Andin).
There are no showers at the refuge but an outside sink and the various streams around the hut are available for a quick wash as you admire the numerous ibex in the area.
To reach the Pierre à Bérard mountain refuge leave your vehicle in the little hamlet of Buet, commune of Vallorcine, opposite the Buet hotel.
Take the path that leads to the Bérard waterfall and then carry on along the small valley.
The path continues through the forest before leading out into a superb valley where you will be able to see the refuge in the distance.
Allow approx. 2 1/2 hrs from the Buet car park.
Groups are always welcome at the refuge, but please book well before the start of the summer season.

Camping is allowed around the refuge, but we would ask you to come to the refuge to inform us of your presence before setting up your tent, due to being on the edge of the nature reserve. (Please let the guardian know if you wish to eat at the refuge).
The refuge does not have a picnic room; we allow visitors to eat their own food in the dining room and on the terrace (depending on the space available) but ask that each person purchase at least one drink or snack.
Camping stoves are not allowed inside the refuge.
Water to fill your water bottle is available at the side of the building.
We would ask all those who use the refuge to ensure that the area is clean when they leave the mountain and to take their rubbish down into the valley with them.
It is in everyone's interest to keep the mountains clean and to respect them for all they offer us. Thank you on their behalf!
